You are a small business owner and you have been working on your website for a few weeks or a few months. You may be building it yourself or you may have hired a web designer to build it for you. The day comes when it is finally ready and the launch date is here. Your website is now online! Great! Now what?
Just having your website online is not enough. How are people going to know your website in online? Imagine if you bought a new house and didn’t tell any of your friends or family that you had moved. You didn’t update your mailing address with the post office. You didn’t inform any of your service providers like your yardman or the grocery delivery that you have moved. Would you really expect anyone to find you? The only way anyone might know that you have moved would be if they happened to be driving through your new neighborhood on their way to somewhere else and you were standing in the front yard at the exact moment that they drove by your house. In other words, they just stumbled upon your new house.
Don’t leave your web traffic to chance. There are over billions websites on the Internet in 2019. (This link will show you the current number. https://www.broadbandsearch.net/blog/internet-statistics) So having someone come to your website can’t be left to chance. You need a specific plan to drive web traffic to your website. Here are a few tips on how to do that.
- Use your blog – Your website’s blog is the starting point for website traffic. The blog is on your website which is where you are trying to drive traffic, but once you write your blog posts there are a number of places to post it which can bring people to your website. Anywhere you promote your blog, be sure to include a link back to your website.
- Use social media – Social media is another great way to drive traffic back to your website. You can post curated content, written or developed by other people, or your own content such as your blog post, and link back to your website.
- Use email marketing – A list of your previous clients and contacts can be the foundation of your email list. Gather additional members of your list by offering lead magnets and reaching out on social media. Develop an announcement about your new website and send it to your email list. Be sure and get permission from people that they want to receive your emails.
- Use offline methods – Don’t forget offline methods of driving web traffic. Be sure your web address is printed on your business cards. It should be on your flyers, brochures, and any ads you run about your business. If you participate in a conference or vendor exhibit, put your web address on your signage or advertising specialties.
Building and launching your website is just the first step. (If you haven’t built your website yet, check out our blog post Small business marketing starts with a website.) Once you are online you have to let people know where you are and invite them over for a visit. Getting web visitors is not easy with the number of websites on the Internet, but with a little concerted effort it can be done.
