For small businesses a marketing strategy is very important. Budgets may be tight if you are just getting started, but you still need to market your business if you want to be successful. Marketing your business is essential to its growth and success. But how do you effectively market your start up small business on a limited budget? One way is by using social media.
When you post content on social media, your own or someone else’s, with information about your business and industry, you can attract the attention of people interested in that topic. As you continue to post informational and educational content on social media you can establish yourself as an expert in that industry or on those topics. This is great for convincing your target market of your expertise and identifying potential clients. But building a social media following organically (not through paid advertising) on social media takes time. So, it is important to identify the best social media networks for your business.
As a start-up business owner, you will generally have more time than money, but there are limits on your time as well. For that reason, I recommend that you limit your social media campaign to two, no more than three, social media networks. That should allow you enough time to post content regularly, but also take time to listen to what others are saying and respond appropriately.
There are a number of social media networks and the number seems to be constantly growing. So how do you decide which social media networks are right for your business or industry? Here are a few tips:
- Fit the social network to your business or industry – Twitter is known for short frequent messages. If you are a financial planner, sending short, frequent updates could suit your needs. You could send tweets about what’s happening in the stock market and other financial sectors. If you are an interior designer, Pinterest is a visual social network and would be great to showcase some of your recent work. If your business sells consumer products or services, Facebook is where you want to be.
- Use your strengths – If you are a good writer, writing blog posts would be good. You can post the blogs on your website, take a sentence or two to post on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, and then link back to your blog post on your website. If you are a good photographer, take pictures related to your business and post them on Pinterest and Instagram. If you are engaging and a good speaker, consider shooting videos and post them on YouTube. Then post a link to the video on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
- Conduct research to find out where your target market hangs out. When using social media for your business, it is imperative that you find out where to find your target market online. Wherever they are on social media, you need to be there also.

The majority of the people in the world are on at least one social media network. So, when you are marketing your small business, odds are your target market can be found on one or more of them. Your job is to find out which ones to make the most of your marketing efforts.
